For others, they\u2019re the High Season of Fraud. Ricardo Velez, fraud prevention and performance manager with Amerant Bank, says \u201cfraudsters\u201d are looking for any opportunity they can find to separate you from your money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe holidays are a fun time of year, and I think people are excited to be getting out and traveling and spending money on gifts and treats,\u201d Mr. Velez says. But, he warns, fraudsters are working overtime, hoping to catch people when they\u2019re most easily distracted. \u201cYou have to be extra vigilant,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is their full-time job and it\u2019s their most lucrative time of year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uploads-ssl.webflow.com\/61a7aa99f629c2eeecbcd2f5\/61b2e531a1fe0858ba415b32_Fraud%20Body%20Image.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Ricardo Velez, fraud prevention and performance manager with Amerant Bank<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Velez says fraudsters are getting bolder and ever more sophisticated with their schemes. \u201cThey\u2019ve gone digital, too, just like the rest of us,\u201d he says. \u201cIt simply opens the door to new ways for them to try and get to your money.\u201d They especially like instant payment services now used by millions of people to make and receive payments. \u201cWith real-time transactions like those, fraudsters can quickly get your funds and move on to their next victim.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another popular scheme is when \u201cthe bank\u201d texts or emails you regarding an \u201curgent\u201d problem with your account that needs your immediate attention lest your funds be lost forever. \u201cThey\u2019ll ask you to provide your credentials so they can take care of it for you,\u201d explains Mr. Velez, who emphasizes that Amerant employees will never ask you for your personal financial information over the phone or by email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe maintain rigid adherence to the strictest financial security practices and do everything in our power to safeguard our customers\u2019 accounts every single day,\u201d Mr. Velez says. \u201cWe have internal systems and controls that use the latest technology to red-flag suspicious activity the instant it happens.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the end, he says, customers play the biggest role in protecting their online identity and preventing unauthorized access to their accounts. \u201cSo many people get tricked into revealing their personally identifiable financial information (PIFI) \u2013 especially older customers who oftentimes can be easily confused, flustered and misled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another security risk can happen right at your doorstep, Mr. Velez says. \u201cThieves are stealing mail right out of people\u2019s mailboxes hoping to find checks or anything else of value.\u201d Once they have a check, he explains, they can alter, forge or counterfeit the item and drain the funds from your account. \u201cPeople also leave outgoing mail or packages in their mailbox, where they may end up getting picked up by someone other than the mail carrier.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it\u2019s the holiday season or any time of year, Mr. Velez offers these&nbsp;<strong>six tips for keeping your bank accounts safe:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#1. Use Your Phone<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;You can deposit checks right from your smartphone and schedule recurring payments electronically so that you don\u2019t have to mail checks to your creditors and utility companies. \u201cIt\u2019s secure, convenient and free,\u201d Mr. Velez says. \u201cAnd it saves gas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#2. Set Up Alerts<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Mr. Velez strongly recommends creating alerts for your online and mobile banking accounts, so you\u2019ll know if there\u2019s an unexpected drop in funds or spending suddenly exceeds pre-set limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#3. Protect Your PIFI<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Mr. Velez says you should never share your PIFI through email, text or talking on the phone. \u201cAmerant may be where your funds \u2018live\u2019, and we provide the security, but you actually hold the keys to your home,\u201d he says, referring to your personal login and password for your Amerant account. \u201cGive those to somebody you don\u2019t know or trust, and they could clean out your funds in a matter of seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#4. Trust Your Instincts \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>If you receive a phone call, text message or email about your Amerant account that seems suspicious, Mr. Velez recommends calling the branch where you bank or Amerant\u2019s main toll-free number (1-855 AMERANT) and someone can help you verify if it\u2019s legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#5. Don\u2019t Use Mailboxes \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;If you\u2019re mailing anything of value, Mr. Velez suggests taking it to the Post Office. \u201cIt may not be as convenient, but it\u2019s far more secure than leaving it in your own mailbox or in a collection bin somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#6. Sound The Alarm \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>Reporting unusual or fraudulent activity on your account as soon as you notice it is your best bet, according to Mr. Velez. \u201cThe odds of getting important
