The AM Call: The Waiting Game

  • Markets continued their downtrend last week as the war in the Middle East continued without resolution. Stocks were lower on the week, with the Nasdaq approaching correction territory (-10% drawdown). Other major equity indices were also lower for the week, although not by as much. Yields also continued to climb, with the long end of the Treasury curve now close to 5%.
  • As the first quarter of 2026 concludes, the market mood appears to us to be somewhat fragile with “wait and see” posture. Given the amount of disruption in the Gulf region, we believe that markets have so far held up relatively well, perhaps pricing in a resolution to the conflict to be achieved in the next several weeks. We sense there could be further downside risk to sentiment if the conflict drags on for much longer.
  • It was a relatively light week for macro data last week. Preliminary March PMIs showed expansion in both manufacturing (52.4 actual, 51.5 estimate, 51.6 prior) and services (51.1 actual, 52.0 estimate, 51.7 prior). The composite PMI was down slightly MoM to 51.4 from 51.9.
  • In tech news, Meta (META) shares sold off heavily after a negative landmark decision found the Social Media company financially liable to teenage victims of mental health and addiction, concluding the company knowingly avoided safeguarding measures, setting a dangerous legal precedent for Meta and raised concerns over previously ignored possible regulatory risk. The soaring stock prices of memory chips such as Micron (MU) and Sandisk (SNDK) turned into an instant meltdown after Google’s (GOOGL) announcement of TurboQuant, an AI memory compression algorithm that delivers 6x decrease in memory consumption while increasing performance 8x, leading to concerns in the structural demand for Memory products in the future. Cybersecurity firms were also dumped heavily by investors following Anthropic’s disclosure of its new LLM model Mythos which came with heavy warnings for possible cyber security risks and their inability to defend from AI agent attacks using the models groundbreaking capabilities. Lastly, in AI disruption news for the week, software stocks sell off picked up once again following a report that Amazon (AMZN) is developing an enterprise level AI Agent with capabilities for Sales and business development.
  • In other corporate news, Arm Holdings (ARM) shares rose on disclosure it will, for the first time, develop its own Chips marking a horizontal expansion for the firm with heavy support from Meta as an anchor client promising $15 Billion in annual sales within five years. Advanced Micro (AMD) and Intel (INTC) shares reacted well to reports that both companies will hike the prices of their CPU given increase demand for their products.
  • In Private market news, Ares (ARES) and Apollo (APO) were the latest credit managers to gate their BDCs as both chose to honor the 5% fund term redemption requests but not excess amounts, leaving investors with an approximate 45% pro-rata access to their capital requests for the current quarterly redemption window.

The Week Ahead

  • This week, we get the March payroll report which is expected to show that nonfarm payrolls expanded by 50,000 compared to a loss of 92,000 jobs last month. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 4.4%, while average hourly earnings rise by 3.7% YoY.
  • We also get February Advance Retail Sales, which are expected to rise by 0.4% MoM on a headline basis. Retail sales excluding the volatile Auto and Gas categories is expected to be up by only a modest 0.2% MoM.
  • Fourth quarter earnings season is mostly concluded. This week Nike (NKE), Conagra (CAG), Hertz (HTZ) and Restauration Hardware (RH) are some of the companies set to report.

  • GDPNow is not an official forecast of the Atlanta Fed. Rather, it is best viewed as a running estimate of real GDP growth based on available economic data for the current measured quarter. There are no subjective adjustments made to GDPNow—the estimate is based solely on the mathematical results of the model. It does not anticipate their impact on forthcoming economic reports beyond the standard internal dynamics of the model.
  • The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program produces detailed industry estimates of nonfarm employmenthours, and earnings of workers on payrolls. CES National Estimates produces data for the nation, and CES State and Metro Area produces estimates for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions. Each month, CES surveys approximately 142,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 689,000 individual worksites. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
  • Initial Claims: An initial claim is a claim filed by an unemployed individual after a separation from an employer. The claimant requests a determination of basic eligibility for the UI program. When an initial claim is filed with a state, certain programmatic activities take place and these result in activity counts including the count of initial claims. The count of U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance is a leading economic indicator because it is an indication of emerging labor market conditions in the country.
